The OAKS Secondary Initial Teacher Education Programme (Mainstream)

Based at Keele University

The OAKS has a high quality programme designed to train you to teach in the secondary sector. It has an expert team of very experienced teacher educators who will give you the necessary support needed for this challenging and very rewarding course.
The OAKS Secondary Initial Teacher Education Programme has been designed to be both academic and vocational and is predicated on the requirements to provide challenging expectations of you as a Trainee Teacher to create a teaching and learning environment which will engage your interest and motivation. The broad aims of the main curriculum component of programme are to:
• Develop your subject knowledge and teach you how to put that knowledge into practice (pedagogy) in order to thrive in the culture of our schools;
• Enable you to become a highly motivated, outstanding effective, creative and reflective practitioner;
• Prepare you for a career in teaching that will prove to be successful and rewarding;
• Develop in you a commitment to and enthusiasm for continuing professional and personal development;
• Provide you with sufficient information, experience and opportunity in order that you might achieve the National Teacher Standards to enable you to be recommended for QTS.
As well as doing 2 secondary placements, you will also have a one week placement in a partnership primary school so that you can gain an understanding of how your own subject specialism begins and what transition and progression arrangements may be put in to place.
At the OAKS you will also gain other vital school or education related experiences:
• Visit a pupil referral unit (PRU)
• Spend time in a special school for SEND experience
• Have a MAPP (multi agency placements) entitlement e.g. welfare officers, etc.
• EAL (English as an additional language) in multi-cultural partnership schools

At the beginning of the course there will also be a two day (one night) residential to learn about how trips out of school can be successful in enhancing pupil progress and confidence with peers and adults away from their home and school environment.

The OAKS offers a very diverse and exciting spread of experiences which should enable you to gain very valuable experiences to take to your first NQT placement school i.e. your first job! They will keep in touch through this year and offer even more continuing support. The OAKS team wants to support you and maintain a caring environment which they hope that you will eventually offer to your future pupils.

The University of Derby (Mainstream & Special)

Based at the Derby Campus, Kedleston Road

At a time when rapid policy shifts are transforming the educational landscape, the University of Derby will help you to meet the challenge of change in the modern classroom. You will be taught by a highly competent and qualified team of tutors, including published authors and influential researchers whose work is helping to shape the future of the profession. You’ll study modules such as:

Alongside two main teaching placements, you will have the chance to visit other schools and to work with children from different backgrounds. This includes the opportunity (if not already on the SEND pathway) to gain experience in a special school. You will also focus on your subject specialism to improve your practice and will study school-related issues at masters level.

With intensive support in the classroom and the guidance of University experts, you will be fully prepared for the practical demands of secondary teaching in your chosen subject specialism.

Optional SEND Pathway
If you choose to specialise in SEND you will focus on a diverse range of topics including SEND policy and legislation, effective inclusive practice, and meeting the challenges of teaching in the SEND sector. Your main placement with be in a Special school with your shorter second placement at a Mainstream secondary school.

This Teacher Training course allows graduates with an appropriate honours degree to train at postgraduate level to become school teachers. Their lecturers’ visionary course management ensures that their teacher training courses are at the cutting edge of research and school practice. Their course team have a huge and current experience within schools and teaching and are well connected to national training initiatives that inform practice. In addition to offering excellent initial teacher training awards, academics in the School of Education are active in national and international consultancy, support schools and teachers in their development and continue to be research active and publish in the areas of interest.
Based at the Stoke Campus of Staffordshire University, the course is characterized by small class sizes and has been designed to be both academic and vocational. It involves a mix of university input and school experience every week of the 36 week course with 24 weeks of the course spent in 2 carefully selected placement schools and 12 weeks in the university.
Their course puts learning at the heart of what they do. This means that your learning, as the Associate Teacher, is at the centre of the PGCE just as, when you are teaching, the learning of your school students must be at the centre of your work.

Madeley High School

This school has hugely supported ITT for many years, providing excellent support for trainee teachers working with different training providers. Madeley School is smaller than the average-sized mainstream secondary school, set in the village of Madeley on the outskirts of Staffordshire. The school has worked closely with Blackfriars Teaching School for many years, and is part of the Shaw Education Trust.

Wolstanton High School

Wolstanton High School became a Shaw Education Trust Academy in September 2015. The academy is an 11-16 school, the setting being that of Wolstanton Grammar school founded in 1928. The school has worked in ITT for many years and offers excellent CPD to trainee teachers across the consortium of partnership schools. The school prospectus says “By treating students as individuals and building on their personal strengths, we aim to prepare them to contribute positively to the wider community and ensure they are safe, happy and healthy. Above all we aim to develop an enthusiasm for learning and progress.”

Newcastle Academy is a successful and growing 11-16 academy serving its community within Newcastle-under-Lyme. It is located in a good quality residential suburb of Newcastle-under-Lyme, near the Cheshire border just west of The Potteries. This central location has excellent road and rail links to all major conurbations and is surrounded by stunning countryside and industrial heritage.

The King’s C of E (VA) School

The King’s is an 11-18 school based in Kidsgrove, Stoke-On-Trent. The King’s has a new school building which opened in November 2016. The school places importance upon worship and the place of God in the relationships between staff, pupils and parents. The King’s believes that the link between home and school is fundamental to a child’s academic success. Grove School

Market Drayton, Shropshire

Grove School aims to develop learners who are confident, resilient, enquiring, creative and respectful; who take pride in their achievements and successes. Grove School and Grove College stand together on a large and beautiful site bounded by the River Tern and the Shropshire Union Canal. Grove is Market Drayton’s only secondary school and the School and College together form a comprehensive school which admits both boys and girls and provides courses for 11-19 year-old students of all abilities.

Grove serves not only the town of Market Drayton but also a wide area of North East Shropshire. A number of students from Staffordshire also attend. Grove is a focal point for the community, both for its buildings and facilities which are widely used outside normal school hours, and because it is the natural choice of school for all students in the area. Blackfriars Academy

Blackfriars Academy is an Outstanding Co-educational Special School that caters for approximately 100 students with a generic range of special needs which include physical/medical disabilities, moderate, severe or profound learning difficulties, and/or sight, hearing and speech impairments and epilepsy. The students are aged between 10 and 16 years and come mainly from North and Central Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent, East Cheshire and Shropshire. The Coppice Academy

The Coppice became a Shaw Education Trust Academy in October 2014. The academy is an 11-16 special school and although new to the ITT partnership the academy has received Trainee Teachers on short and extended SEN placements. The school says “Our team of highly trained, enthusiastic staff provide each student with an exciting, individualised learning programme which engages, motivates and fosters a love of learning. Students are constantly stimulated to become the best they can be; academically and personally.”

Walton Hall Academy

Walton Hall became a Shaw Education Trust Academy in October 2014. The academy is an 11-19 special school and is set in beautiful grounds in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. Walton Hall Academy prides itself on helping young people with a range of difficulties to achieve their full potential. Walton Hall Academy is a very happy and diverse learning community with an ethos of mutual respect for others and a sense of adventure in our learning journey. They offer an enriched and holistic curriculum in which they strive to attain with the highest possible academic and social outcomes underpinned by strong pastoral care.
